On Saturday, October 10, 2015, a walkathon was held to raise funds for the St. Nicholas Choir’s one-week residency at Worcester Cathedral, UK, in July 2016. The event was not merely a fund-raiser — the youth are training physically for the challenging schedule they will face in the UK singing the Evensong service daily, even as they also work to train their musical ability.
The walkathon was a great success. It was a beautiful day for a walk. Once around Fort Lowell Park is 1.5 miles. Some walkers did one lap around and others did multiple laps. We all enjoyed pizza and Eegee’s as a reward for our efforts. Our matching green t-shirts with the St. Philip’s logo signified the great multi-generational community building experience. Proceeds exceeded $4,000 toward our $70,000 goal — and we had so much fun we think we’ll do it again next year.
The invitation to serve as the Choir in Residence at the cathedral is a huge honor and privilege and reflects the high level of St. Philip’s youth-oriented music programs. The residency will be a strong sign of sharing our gifts on a global level, and is an amazing growth opportunity. The residency not only will instill in the youth strong leadership skills and a profound sense of accomplishment, but also will provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you to Debra Meyer for organizing the event and especially to our donors for supporting it.
